Border Security Needs Re-Vamped

I recently introduced my "Trust and Verify" amendment to immigration reform that focuses on securing our nation's borders.

As a matter of both national security and immigration policy, it is absolutely essential that we both secure our border and modernize our visa system so we know who comes and who goes on travel, student and other temporary visas.

Right now, we basically have no idea: No idea who crosses our border; no idea who overstays a student visa; no idea whether or not a migrant worker leaves as scheduled.

If we do nothing, our unsecured borders will continue to jeopardize our national security and allow millions of ILLEGAL immigrants into this country, where they currently live under de facto amnesty.

That's why I've introduced "Trust and Verify," which ensures the following:

Verifiable Border Security

Any real solution to the immigration problem must be centered on ensuring we have operational control of our border.

The securing of our border must contain specific and definable goals. These metrics have been under development for years by the Department of Homeland Security. It's time to implement them.

Under my "Trust and Verify" proposal, the border would have to be provably secure, certified by Border Patrol, Investigator General, and by Congressional vote.

And if at any time the border is not deemed secure or our systems are not up to tracking the comings and goings of those on visas, then all aspects of the reforms will cease.

Modernization of Visa System

Border security is not the only measure necessary for successful implementation of reform. We must also have the capacity to do background checks and issue and track visas.

We need to provably modernize the system and prove it can track the current workload for one year before scaling it to future workloads. This also must be certified by Congress.

It is absolutely vital for both the success of our immigration policy and for national security purposes that we secure our borders and modernize our system of issuing and tracking visas.

My plan would allow us to prevent illegal immigration and accurately track legal immigration, both of which will drastically improve our national security.

Several Republican members of the U.S. House and Senate as well as Sean Hannity and other conservative commentators have come out in support of "Trust and Verify."
